CATEC transfers its technology to TECNATOM to locate and create defect records automatically in aerospace components
The Centre for Advanced Aerospace Technologies (CATEC) has signed an agreement of collaboration on technology transfer with the Spanish firm Tecnatom, top level supplier of Non Destructive Tests applied on the manufacture of fibre carbon aerospace components, a technology transfer agreement to be developed by the Centre to locate and create hidden defect records automatically in aerospace components.

Its innovative technology lies in being a wireless device which enables to solve the limitations from non-destructive ultrasonic testing in the case of complex geometry pieces where it is very expensive to install and prepare a kind of inspection involving mechanical encoder to record measurements. This CATEC's development will enable as well to obtain C-Scan records in elements and pieces which don't currently admit this possibility. The agreement of collaboration between both entities was signed last 16 May in the framework of the ADM Seville convention, held in Seville.

The more and more use of composites in the aerospace industry involves new inspection methods since traditional ones result in many cases insufficient to quality control and flaw detection in aerospace components. Besides investigating non-destructive ultrasonic testing, CATEC is also working in other techniques providing interesting results to flaw detection in aerospace components and in other productive sectors like Infrared Termography, Shearogrphy laser and Xray Computerized Tomography.

This agreement will enable CATEC to enlarge its enterprise portfolio to which technological services or RD projects development are offered and which already represents its main finance resources as well as to strengthen the links of collaboration with high-technology firms at national level.

Tecnatom is an international company based in Madrid specializing in NDT engineering services and technologies to provide the development and application of inspection systems and procedures and improve the facilities economical efficiency and industrial processes. Established in 1957, in the course of the last decade it is a top level supplier of non-destructive tests applied to big aerospace composites entity assemblies. Specializing in ultrasonic testing, it provides services to customer such as Boeing, Airbus, Airbus Military, Astrium, Bombardier, Aerocomposit (Russia), COMAC (China), Spirit (US), all the Spanish tier 1 suppliers and other European and Asiatic manufacturers.
