EC-SAFEMOBIL takes off
Under the VII Framework of Research and Technological Development, the European Commission is backing the project EC-SAFEMOBIL, aimed at developing new UAS technologies. The project is intended to increment the possibilities of use in a number of applications like disaster management, search and rescue (especially in extreme conditions), safety and other risky mission for human beings if performed by unmanned aerial systems.

The initiative is led by Professor Aníbal Ollero, FADA-CATEC’s scientific director and professor at the University of Seville; it involves industrial companies, internationally leaders in their sectors, and also research organizations, which have demonstrated its research excellence in several projects. CATEC (FADA-CATEC) is the consortium coordinator, in which the University of Seville takes part, but also the Spanish company Indra, and many entities, such as Selex Galileo (UK), DLR (Germany), EADS Astrium (Germany), Euroimpianti (Italy) the Duisburg-Essen University (Germany), and Zagreb University (Croatia). The initiative has a budget of €6.2 million on which European Commission contributes giving about 4.5 million.

EC-SAFEMOBIL will investigate new methods for accurate estimation of position and motion control that will allow UAS and ground systems became more secure and reliable for a wide range of applications. The initiative also involves the development of architecture and a middleware to guarantee safety and integrity of the exchanged information. The project is developing new technology demonstrators such as landing in critical unmanned aerial vehicles (helicopters and planes) on mobile platforms (ships and land vehicles), the launch of an unmanned aerial vehicle from another manned one, or ground tracking vehicles, using for this tool multiple unmanned aerial systems, able to avoid collisions. The new technology will be demonstrated in other applications such as storage automation through the cooperative work of multiple autonomous ground vehicles.
