
The Center for Advanced Aerospace Technologies (CATEC) is taking part in a research project to evaluate the effect of surface treatments such as Shot Peening, Laser Peening or isotropic finishing on additively manufactured parts, along with the University of Seville, the University of Saarland (Germany) and Curtiss Wright Surface Technologies (CWST). The objective is to contribute to the improvement of the quality of the final product and to increase its useful life in metal parts manufactured with 3D printing.
The results of this research are being very promising due to its advantages, for example, a significant cost savings. FADA-CATEC contributes its experience in the design, topological optimization, manufacturing and inspection of parts using additive technology in different materials.
For this reason, in CATEC’s study of metal parts 3D manufacturing processes it highlights geometric improvements, weight reduction and, consequently, better efficiency. However, this technology has the disadvantage of a worse fatigue behaviour. In this sense, the Curtiss Wright Surface Technologies (CWST) company is developing the most suitable surface treatment for each specific case.
