The ATLAS Center hosts a drill to test 5G network in the rescue of people using drones
Vodafone, Red Cross and Altran, part of Capgemini, have carried out a drill at the ATLAS center to test 5G network in the rescue of people using unmanned aerial vehicles.

The application of the project arises as a result of the alarming figures of disorientation of older people in rural or semi-rural areas, whose location is essential in the first hours, either to avoid hypothermia in winter, or cases of dehydration and hyperthermia in summer, according to the report of the entities involved.

Therefore, it is essential to shorten searching times and avoid the risk of death. This tool allows coordinating volunteers in the area who want to participate in the searching and not only organizations that already have the appropriate structure and regularly participate in this type of interventions.

To develop this pilot project, a 'system of systems' has been created from scratch based on the integration in several demonstrator drones (DJI Mavic Enterprise 2 and DJI Matrice 200 Series) of a mission control software, a support mobile application for rescue teams, an image recognition algorithm and a service server that takes advantage of the 5G network to compute images in very high definition and with more features, as well as for better communication with the command and control center.

Thanks to the 5G network, rescue teams and the command post were able to interact in an agile way with the information provided by the onboard systems at the UAV, such as very high resolution images, thermal images, commands and alerts and generate a map with areas that had already been swept, to improve the Red Cross's searching efficiency.
