The First Workshop RED UAS is a resounding success. It brought together the most outstanding international experts on unmanned aerial systems
More than a hundred of experts, researchers and Scientifics from the most R&D&I outstanding universities and technology centres in the world related to UAS met together at The First Workshop RED UAS 2011 on Research, Development and Education on Unmanned Aerial Systems between the end of November and the beginning of December in Seville.

This important initiative was organized by CATEC and the Robotics, Vision and Control Team from the School of Engineering of the University of Seville, led by the professor Aníbal Ollero, who is also the scientific director at CATEC and the RED UAS Chair Committee. The event was aimed at creating a discussion of ideas and scientific works related to unmanned aerial systems and its prime technological applications. This is currently one of the most promising areas of the aerospace industry and our centre has become a benchmark research and innovation centre at the European sphere. RED-UAS brought together more than 150 attendants, outnumbering the organization’s previsions.

The meeting was supported by Junta de Andalucía, the Spanish Technological Platform for Robotics, the Spanish Aerospace Platform and the Spanish Technology for Aerospace, Aeronautics and Defence (TEDAE) and also the enterprises Cassidian, Indra and Elimco.

The event was inaugurated by the Regional Minister of Economy, Innovation and Science of Junta de Andalucía and had the participation of the Vice-Chancellor of Technology Transfer from the University of Seville, Ramón Gonález Carvajal; the representative of the General Direction of Industry and Entrepreneurship from the European Comission; the general director of CATEC, Juan Pedro Vela; the vice-director of the National Institute for Aerospace Technology, Ángel Moratilla; the chief programme of Cassidian (EADS), Francisco Cano, and the chief of UAV Programme of Indra, Pablo González and Eva Martínez, Aeronautics, Transport and Security representative from CDTI, among others.

The Workshops was a resounding success, since specialists and experts on unmanned aerial Systems from different countries like USA, Australia, Germany, France, Italy, United Kingdom, Mexico, Portugal, Slovakia, Denmark and Spain and R&D&I managers from different enterprises and national and international entities like Cassidian, Indra, Boeing, ISDEFE, Elimco, Sener, Aertec, Usol, the National Insitute for Aerospace Technology (INTA) and CATEC, attended the event.

RED UAS was part of the European Robotics Week. It was developed in two days; the first one was held at the School of Engineering of Seville and had two plenary sessions by the prestigious speakers Salah Sukkarieh (University of Sidney, Australia) and Kimon Valavanis (University of Denver, USA). There were also different talks where 50 research works on methods, methodologies and UAS applications were presented. On the second day, several unmanned aerial systems exhibitions and demonstrations were performanced at the aerodrome of Villamartín (Cádiz), by INTA, CATEC and the enterprises Indra, Elimco and Usol.
